Insurance
It is important that rental vehicles are insured as the cost of repairs in Samoa is very high. Insurance costs are not always included in the price of the rental car and rental cars are subject to a deductible in the event of an accident with personal fault.
Bus:a trip with a public bus in Samoa is quite an experience. The buses are colorful vehicles with wooden seats and loud music.
However, the connections are very irregular and partly dependent on the mood of the respective bus driver. All buses clearly show their destination on the front window. To stop an approaching bus, travelers should move their arm and hand down with the palm facing down. Anyone who sits on the bus and wants to signal that they want to get off, knocks on the bus roof or claps their hands loudly. The fare is paid to the driver in each case.
Although many visitors do not notice it at first: there is a certain seating arrangement or hierarchy in the Samoas buses. For example, while unmarried women usually sit together, care is taken to ensure that older people and also foreigners get a seat, mostly in the front of the bus.
Bicycle: Cycling on Upolu and Savii is mostly relaxed and offers insights into the charming landscape of the islands. However, cyclists should beware of the numerous aggressive dogs. The island’s roads are generally in good condition and there is little traffic. Major roads are paved, but most hiking trails, beaches, and many coastal attractions are best accessed by mountain bike. Bicycles can be transported by ferry between the two main islands of Samoas via Apolima Street. There is seldom enough space on buses to take bicycles with you.
The heat that prevails in Samoa is a major challenge for many cyclists. Even in the cooler months of the year (July, August and September) the temperatures in the afternoon are very high. Long stretches should therefore not be tackled in the heat of the day.
Bicycles are a popular and widely used form of local transport in Samoa. Suitable workshops should therefore not be difficult to find in the event of a breakdown. To be on the safe side, travelers should have their own repair kit and a good lock with them.
Some properties rent bicycles to their guests, but only for day trips and not for long-distance trips. For more information about the continent of Oceania, please check pharmacylib.com.
