Areas such as the coastal region can receive up to 3,000mm of rain annually while other areas such as the northern region may receive as little as 500mm. Snowfall is almost nonexistent in the Ivory Coast due to its location near the equator but it does occasionally occur in higher elevations such as Mount Nimba which can receive up to 0.5m of snow each winter. The Ivory Coast is prone to extreme weather events such as floods, strong winds, thunderstorms, heat waves, cold waves, and sandstorms. These events can cause significant disruption to daily life as well as damage property and infrastructure. Earthquakes are also common due to the Ivory Coast’s location near major fault lines so it is important for people to be prepared for these types of events when they occur.
