Summers are typically warm and humid, with the average temperature in July ranging from 22°C (71°F) to 28°C (82°F). Winter temperatures range from -5°C (23°F) to 5°C (41°F), although temperatures can drop below freezing for extended periods. Spring and autumn are mild but variable, with occasional showers. Generally speaking, the western part of Hungary tends to be slightly warmer than the east. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, although there may be more rain in spring and autumn than in summer and winter. Severe weather is not common in Hungary, but there can be thunderstorms during the summer months which can sometimes bring hail or even tornadoes. Winters are usually quite dry but snowfall can occur sporadically from November onwards. The mountain regions tend to receive more snow than the rest of the country. The highest recorded temperature in Hungary was 40.7 °C (105 °F) which occurred in 2007, while the lowest was -35 °C (-31 °F) recorded in 1940 near Debrecen in eastern Hungary.
