History of Alba, Missouri
Alba, Missouri is a small rural community located in the northwest corner of Ozark County. It was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers who had traveled from Texas. The first post office was established in 1884, and the town was officially incorporated as Alba in 1889.
The town’s name comes from the Latin word “Albus,” which means white. This likely reflects the early settlers’ appreciation for the area’s abundant white limestone deposits. The limestone was used to build many of the town’s buildings, including several churches and homes.
In its early days, Alba was an agricultural community with farms producing corn, wheat and hay for livestock feed. In addition to farming, local businesses included sawmills and grist mills as well as a blacksmith shop and general store. As time passed, more businesses opened up such as a bank and drug store. In 1902 Alba received its own newspaper called The Alba Advocate which ran until 1938 when it was closed due to financial difficulties during The Great Depression.
The population of Alba has remained fairly steady over its history with around 300 people calling it home at any given time. During World War II many young men left to serve their country but returned home after peace was declared in 1945 to find that not much had changed in their absence.
In recent years there has been some growth and development in Alba with new businesses such as restaurants opening up along Highway 160 that runs through town. Despite this growth there is still a strong sense of community among the locals who have lived here for generations and take pride in their small-town heritage.
Alba remains an unassuming rural community with deep roots that date back over 130 years ago when it first became incorporated as a town on April 13th.
